BCI Board Meeting February 2025

Glen Redstall, BCI Global Board Chair held the first face-to-face board meeting of his two-year tenure in London, UK, last month (pictured). This was a key meeting at the start of the process for the board to determine in broad terms what the BCI’s strategy will be for the 3 to 5 years ahead.

“This is a more pivotal strategy process than we’ve held in recent years” Redstall explains. “We’re looking at a steady erosion in the way the public views professional expertise and with the relentless progress of AI and its many potential impacts on the profession we need to make sure that the choices we make in order to serve our members and wider society better are the right ones”.
Over the three full days of meetings a number of presentations were made by the BCI Central Office senior team and also by Jasmiina Rousu. Rousu has just stepped down as Future Leader on board attachment, but will continue to work with the Board over the next two years as Next Generation Champion, with a specific responsibility to advise the board on how to adjust our proposition to younger members. Each presentation was followed by vigorous debate with a range of diverse views in the mix before a broad consensus was reached on how we should proceed with our strategic planning.
Amongst the issues discussed were the BCI’s positioning in the Resilience space and the opportunities and threats to its ability to continue to better serve our members globally; the radical upgrading and future-proofing of BCI’s IT, CRM and LMS platforms; a full review of Learning provision; the evolution of our Knowledge Strategy; the ongoing development of BCI World; boosting our Marketing effectiveness; maintaining BCI’s relevance as the key professional body in our discipline.
“For me one of the key discussions over the weekend was the challenge of attracting younger people into making their career in Resilience, to ensure the long term health of both the profession and the BCI itself. We are under no doubt that Generation Z views and approaches the world and its challenges in a fundamentally different way from older professionals like me and this in turn influences the way they choose and consume services and actually shape the evolution of those services”. Glen Redstall says. “It’s a really exciting time and we have the opportunity to be at the forefront of how the profession evolves over the next ten years”.
After the meeting, the Central Office team was tasked with transforming the board's guidance into a strategic plan, which they will present for further discussion and adoption.
The meeting marked the first full attendance of Alice Kaltenmark, FBCI, who was elected to the board in December 2024. Isaac Wheatley was also welcomed as he replaced Jasmiina Rousu as the Future Leader on a two-year board associateship.
