The BCI warmly welcomes Alice Kaltenmark as the newest member of the board. In this interview, Alice tells us more about her background and why she was keen to volunteer for a board member position.

What has your resilience journey been like?

I have been in resilience roles since 1995, officially transitioning into the field in 2003. My work as a Release Manager laid the foundation for a career dedicated to bridging business and technology to ensure uninterrupted operations. At RELX, I helped establish the corporate BCM function, I advanced technical resilience at LexisNexis Legal, and contributed to supplier resilience management. Before this, I led software development and operations teams. This month, I proudly celebrate 42 years with LexisNexis.

When did you become passionate about volunteering?

I began volunteering and giving back to the resilience profession in 2009 when I was elected as a Co-Program Director for Continuity Professionals of Ohio (CPO). I subsequently served as treasurer and president and I concurrently continue to serve as treasurer, CPO. In 2015, I put myself forward to run for the BCI USA Chapter board and was successful in being elected. I enjoyed my six years on the USA Chapter board and served as Membership Director, Treasurer, Vice President and President. This is only a small fraction of the various roles I have served in for BCI.

What role has the BCI played in this journey?

The BCI has played a large part in building and honing my executive leadership skills whilst solidifying my continuity and resilience foundation. I have been blessed and honoured to serve in a variety of leadership roles throughout my volunteer journey with the BCI. Each role has provided multiple opportunities to learn and grow as a global leader. I have also had the wonderful opportunity to share my passion for resilience by teaching BCI courses. I learn something new from every student in every class that I teach. This helps me to stay relevant to today’s resilience professionals as well as bridge the gap from the ‘old’ to the ‘new’ ways of working. I have met so many wonderful colleagues through the years and count many as my friends. This community is strong, dynamic and resilient!

Why were you interested in joining the board of the BCI?

Joining the BCI global board is a natural progression of my volunteer contributions to the organization. I have participated in many facets of the BCI mission and am ready to contribute at this highest level giving back and shaping the profession I have chosen. I go into this opportunity with my eyes wide open to the challenges faced by the global board. I am confident that my leadership experience at the local, regional, national and global level has prepared me for this next step in my volunteering contributions.

I am “all-in” on furthering the role of The BCI in the resilience profession. I view this organization as a pivotal voice in setting the course for resilience. As such, governance of this esteemed organization is of paramount importance. I know that my passion and perspective will be of value to the board and the organization.

My areas of interest are in driving membership value, ensuring the educational opportunities stay relevant to the current world environment, and governance and fiscal management of the organization. The world is constantly changing and this organization must stay in synch with the changes to remain relevant to our members, all of us driving towards a more resilient world.

What are your board priorities over the coming year?

My initial priorities are to learn the board director role and gain an in-depth understanding of our current financial structure and revenue driving initiatives. The next immediate priority is to actively participate in shaping the BCI strategic plan that will steer the course of the organization into the next quarter century. Once that strategic direction is confirmed, the job will be to oversee its execution. Exciting times are ahead for the BCI!
