Professionals/practitioners with an MBCI grade have a comprehensive understanding of business continuity and resilience and can evaluate complex information as part of their daily work to carry out well-defined tasks. There are two routes to becoming an MBCI: standard and experiential.
Routes to MBCI
Standard route to MBCI
- Applicants must have passed the CBCI exam (taken at any time since 2008) OR Hold the Business Continuity Management BCI Diploma OR Hold a current AMBCI Membership.
- Applicants must have completed at least 20 hours of CPD in the past 12 months.
- Applicants must prove that they meet selected Competency and Elemental areas at the ‘Comprehensive’ level as detailed in the Competency Framework.
What documents do MBCI Applicants have to submit if applying through the Standard route?
- A current CV/Resume – detailing all roles and responsibilities to date.
- Record CPD via your online profile - all the CPD undertaken within the past year to keep your knowledge and skill set up to date, this must amount to at least 20 hours.
- Candidate Self-Assessment form
- References to support your application
- MBCI Application form – Applicants must supply evidential statements against seven of the 11 Competency areas:
- Four evidential statements must be from any of the Leadership & Management Competency areas
- Three evidential statements must be from any of the Professional Practice Competency areas.
For each competency and element that you complete, your evidence must demonstrate that you meet at least 'Comprehensive’ competency level.
The evidential statements must be written in terms of the STAR technique; describing the Situation, the Tasks, Actions, and Results in which the competency was demonstrated.

Experiential route to MBCI
For professionals who have not taken the CBCI Exam, there is another route to MBCI Membership.
- Applicants must have completed at least 20 hours of CPD in the past 12 months.
- Applicants must prove they meet all 11 Competency areas at the ‘Comprehensive’ level. As detailed in the Competency Framework.
What documents do MBCI Applicants have to submit if applying through the Experiential route?
- A current CV/Resume – detailing all roles and responsibilities to date
- Record all CPD on the CPD Activity form - This must amount to at least 20 hours, be within the past year, and show how you have kept your knowledge and skill set up to date.
- Candidate Self-Assessment form.
- References to support your application
- MBCI Application form – Applicants must supply evidential statements against all 11 Competency areas.
For each competency and element that you complete, your evidence must demonstrate that you meet at least the ‘Comprehensive’ competency level.
